Narrative approach involves collecting people’s stories and experiences to understand their culture, values, and customs. This research method not only records individual experiences within a community but also deepens the understanding of the entire community through interpretation of its culture. Can the social welfare sector utilize narrative approach in service planning and service evaluation?

Supported by Swire Charitable Trust, our Council joined hands with 4 partner organizations to implement a project entitled “Building Community, Building Tung Chung” in the past 3 years.  Included in the project is an attempt of narrative approach to social impact assessment to explore how community culture is conducive to building a community. This research salon is one of the activities of this project. In addition to the sharing of our experience, we have invited Mr. Benjamin Sin, Senior Social Work Supervisor of Caritas Youth and Community Service to be the guest speaker to discuss how cultural conservation is used to promote community identity and community building. Together, we would like to explore the possibilities and limitations of using narrative approach in social research. Details are as follows:
