Although the epidemic of COVID-19 has eased slightly, it has caused a major blow to the economy and people’s livelihood, and the problems of unemployment and underemployment have emerged.

According to the survey conducted by The Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS), nearly 90% of the respondents have decreased their income due to unemployment, underemployment or other reasons. If the situation continues, many grassroots families have to reduce the expense on food and children’s learning, and even borrow money to maintain their basic living.

Collecting Resource, Empowering People to Combat the Epidemic

HKCSS collaborates with corporate partners and charitable foundations to provide over HK$66 million subsidy to grassroots directly on living expenses and rents. It benefits over 7,100 persons / families.

At the same time, disadvantaged groups are always in lack of prevention resource. Social welfare workers are working hard altogether to acquire social resources to support the persons in need, e.g. Elderly, Children, Youth, Grassroots families, People with disabilities, Street Sleepers, Ethnic minorities, Carers, Unemployed, , Ex-mentally ill persons, people with chronic illness. As of Mid-June, HKCSS has distributed 7.13 million pieces of Masks & 800 thousand of other materials. It is over 1.11 million beneficiaries.

HKCSS and social welfare organisations will continue to closely monitor the epidemic situation and provide timely support to families and persons in need.
