With the development of Smart City Blueprint in Hong Kong and driven by the epidemic in recent years, the internet has further become an essential medium for the public to obtain information, communicate, shopping, etc. In 2021, the household broadband penetration rate had reached 96.1% meanwhile the citizens spend increasing screen time with averagely above 4 hours every day, and mainly surfing on the social media. However, are they capable to act wisely on the internet flooded with information?

Today (February 8, the 2nd Tuesday of February every year) is the International Internet Safety Day (www.saferinternetday.org)Every year, “WebOrganic” from “HKCSS-Information Technology Resource Centre” launches various thematic activities to promote the positive use of the Internet to the public. This year, with support from Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, “WebOrganic” will continue to co-work with different social service units and schools to organize “Media Literacy and Online Safety 101” with a series of community and school activities to enhance students’, parents’, seniors’ and the public’s awareness and ability on information literacy and distinguishing information.

Themed activities include,

February to June 2022

  • Digital Information Helpfulness Kit (targets: students, parents, elders, etc.)
  • “Media Literacy and Online Safety 101” Train-the-trainer webinar (targets: social service workers, educators, etc.)
  • Themed video shooting: “Media Literacy and Online Safety 101” partnered schools/social service units will be subsidized and guided to produce educational videos and worksheets on digital literacy and information authenticity with WebOrganic’s support.

July to December 2022

  • “Media Literacy and Online Safety 101” Video Campaign (Target: All primary and secondary school students in Hong Kong)
  • School/Community talks (targets: students, parents & elderly)
