As Hong Kong has become a super-aged society, the community demand for elderly care, carer support, end-of-life care, and post-death arrangements is growing. To align with the government’s policy direction of “Aging in Place as the Core, Institutional Care as Back-up,” our Council previously organized the “Collaboration and Localization Project on ‘Compassionate Communities'” and liaised with relevant organizations in selected districts to establish pilot sites. And the frontline social workers were engaged to discuss and design a practice on “Compassionate Community” tailored to local needs.

Located in a remote area with relatively limited medical resources, Sai Kung is selected as one of pilot site which faces significant challenges in providing timely support for “Aging in Place.” Therefore, there is a need to prepare the elderly for future care arrangements and even end-of-life wishes earlier. However, many social service workers find it difficult to initiate conversations on life and death, possibly due to a lack of relevant knowledge and training. In response, our Council is going launch the “Compassionate Communities Pilot Activity — Sai Kung District Social Service Practical Training Series” to provide training for social workers who serve in Sai Kung and other remote areas in order to enhancing their capacity to promote life and death education as well as life management discussions in the community.
