Data collection is an essential part of social welfare research and advocacy. The Census and Statistics Department is releasing the results of the 2021 Population Census in stages through interactive statistics which allow users to produce customized statistical tables and charts according to their needs. Duration the process of election, the new HKSAR Chief Executive expressed deep concern on various livelihood and welfare problems of the society.  The new administration has been initiating various ideas and programmes to address these livelihood issues, and has also been active in engaging various sectors and stakeholders to deliberate various possibilities in terms of social policy.          The Chief Executive is going to deliver his first Policy Address in October and we expect that some related social issues or problems will be mentioned and policy initiatives may be announced.    In view of this, we have successfully invited Mr. Chris Sun, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, to have a dialogue with our sector after the Policy Address.  We expect to discuss with him issues on poverty alleviation, care for the elderly, assistance to the frail, social welfare planning, subvention system and so on.  We hope that this can foster closer collaboration between the sector and the government for improving welfare services and the livelihood of the people. In recent years, under the open data plans implemented by the government, public bodies such as government departments and statutory bodies become more positive in opening up public information they manage for public use.  The collection and use of public data will help practitioners from the sector to explore and identify community characteristics for service development. Project PRAISE, a collaboration project sponsored by the Kadoorie Foundation between the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) and two social operators (Yuen Long Town Hall & H.K.S.K.H. Lady MacLehose Centre), aims to promote ethnic minorities' (EM) empowerment and social inclusion in Hong Kong. We plan to build a systematic and social intelligible tool for the advocacy of a socially inclusive society, namely the Hong Kong inclusion and Diversity (HKiD) Index. Over the past year, the research team has come up with 6 life domains and a list of objective indicators. We would like to present our tentative indicators and seek advice from individuals who are working toward diversity and inclusion, as well as the bigger ethnic minority community in Hong Kong. Therefore, an engagement activity titled Count Us In: Deliberation Day for Social Inclusion and Diversity are organized for ethnic minorities and professionals from different sectors who are concerned with ethnic minorities' issues in a participatory discussion. Our Council has been organizing ‘Evidence-based Practice Social Work Research Salons’, which aims to share the social work studies with practitioners in the sector, and to exchange how relevant research can inspire policy advocacy and service development. Recently, many social welfare organizations are exploring utilizing data science to identify core issues and needs of the social groups as well as for social service planning and efficient allocation of social welfare resources.
