“Care Cuisine” for the Elderly

Food intake can be affected by loss of teeth, poor mental state, stroke and declined swallowing function. After being assessed by a speech therapist, a patient may need to follow a liquid diet with the food minced and processed, namely the “pureed meals”, so that the patient can eat safe without chewing. Ms Amy Yeung, Dietitian of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, said that “pureed meals” owing to the uninviting appearance and lack of texture of pureed meals, some people refuse to eat and therefore become unhealthy. As such, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council (SKH) has created the pureed “Care Cuisine” filled with love for the resident elders. Pureed fish, meat and vegetables are processed and arranged to be a milky-white fish and a piglet in flesh colour. The “Care Cuisine” not only retains the nutrients, but also improves the appearance and texture of the food. Amy said when the “Care Cuisine” was first introduced. SKH found that it has cheered the elders up, engaged their interest in food and prompted them to eat more. Their family members are also delighted to see that much thought has been put into the meals. After two weeks ...

Robotic Walker is not an ordinary walker

A mixture of factors including the design, materials and texture of the pathway, etc., would impose different degree of difficulties to the seniors when they manipulate their walking frames. The “Robotic Walker” electronic walking frame is equipped with a mechanical power assistance system.  It can detect a user’s propulsion, and then generate the suitable additional power to help the user walk safely and naturally.  The Walker will supply appropriate additional power when the user walks on the level ground or goes up a slope, while giving friction when going downhill.  With this Walker, the elders will be able to move around on various pathways in a more stable and safe manner, and they will also be able to go up or down slopes more easily ...

“ComfyLift” a transformable bed-wheelchair

According to the population estimates from the HKSAR Government, 1 in 4 persons in Hong Kong will age over 65 by 2029. The ageing population has led to an increasing demand for residential homes as well as care workers for the elderly people. Improving the work efficiency of residential homes and the quality of life of the elderly people have become an important agenda in the welfare sector. For the elderly with limited mobility, their daily lives are very much dependent on the use of hoist. The operation of hoist, however, can be labour intensive. It reduces the likelihood of the elderly people to leave their beds every day and engage in other social activities. The physical health of some of the elderly people would deteriorate due to the lack of activity. For instances, pressure sores would develop due to poor blood circulation resulting from constant pressure applied to the skin over a period of time; or weakening of muscle strength may result as they do not move and exercise for too long. To improve the mobility of the bedridden elderly people and reduce the manpower requirement in residential homes, The Hong Kong Council of Social Service has built a ...

Memorable Elderly Meals Campaign

As Hong Kong's population ages, some elderly people would choose to live in residential care home for the elderly. Many of them have swallowing problems and different nutritional needs, which renders meals handling crucial. The Homes for the Elderly of Sik Sik Yuen collaborated with speech therapists and dieticians to assess individual residents of the elderly home and provide elderly meals catering for different needs. Mr Stephen Ma Chak-Wa, Vice-Chairmen of Sik Sik Yuen, said “We provide 3 types of meals designed for the elderly with different needs, namely normal, minced and pureed meals. Meanwhile, rice is cooked in 4 types of hardness to serve the elderly in need.” To arouse the awareness of the residents, staff, family members and the public on the diets for frail elders, Sik Sik Yuen has organised the Elderly Meals Campaign since 2013, where each of its 5 residential care homes for the elderly would take part as a group in the Elderly Menu Design Competition to improve the living quality of the senior residents. “All of the 5 dishes cater for the needs of the elderly, which are easy to chew, swallow and digest, and are aesthetically pleasing. We especially appreciate the ...
