Guiding Star Scholarship Award 2017/18

Guiding Star Scholarship

Guiding Star Scholarship Award is sponsored by Drs Richard Charles and Esther Yewpick Lee Charitable Foundation. The scholarship aims to encourage young people with the aspiration in making positive changes in others’ lives and in giving back to the community to devote themselves in the helping profession of social work, regardless of their economic circumstances.

Drs Richard Charles and Esther Yewpick Lee Charitable Foundation has appointed The Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) to administer the scholarship, including the review of applications, selection of awardees and disbursement of scholarship funds.

Number of Awardees and Amount of Award:

There will be 20 scholarships in 2017/18. Each awarded student will receive a grant of HK$30,000.

Eligibility:

  • The applicants should be Hong Kong residents
  • 2017/18 full-time Year 1 or Year 2 students in sub-degree (Higher Diploma/Associate Degree) Social Work Programme, which is recognized by the Social Workers Registration Board for registration of social workers
  • The applicants whose families are low-income or recipients of CSSA, or have special needs (e.g. family members suffering from chronic diseases)
  • Good character and conduct, with outstanding academic achievements and demonstrated commitment in community or volunteer services
  • Awardees will be required to pledge that they shall complete the full-time sub-degree (Higher Diploma /Associate Degree) Social Work Programme

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrated need for financial assistance
  • Leadership and good communication skills
  • Volunteer and work experience in NGOs and community groups
  • Strong commitment to the Hong Kong community
  • High standard of academic performance

  • HKCSS will consolidate all applications, conduct due diligence, initial assessment and invite shortlisted applicants for interviews
