The First Gerontech And Innovation Expo Cum Summit Concluded Successfully【Press release on 18 June 2017】 The Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES) concluded with great success today (June 18) and drew over 43,000 participants, including the public, members of the industry and scholars to engage in varied activities during the three-day event to experience the convenience and benefits of gerontechnology for the elders and caregivers.

The GIES was co-hosted by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS), the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation is the event co-organiser. Speaking at the Closing Ceremony, Mr. Chua Hoi Wai, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong Council of Social Service, said, "We are delighted to meet new friends, both local and international; from governmental, commercial, research and development, as well as design sectors, all are hearty to build up a strong and vibrant network.”

Mr. Chua said, “Although the Expo is closed today, our task is not over. We will inherit and carry forward this connection continuously and bring the gerontechnology to the community. We will be endeavoring to strive for and focus on the well-being of the elders by stimulating more visionaries to develop appropriate products and services to the elders.”

Numerous keynote speeches, plenary sessions and over 20 workshops and seminars were hosted by gurus, scholars, and members of the industry from different aspects. Apart from experience in promoting gerontechnology, those professionals also enlightened the public by sharing their insights regarding the opportunities and challenges that ageing population brought to the society. Participants could also learn more about specific streams of technological products and services for elders through diversified workshops.

“Future Camp,” a two-day event in the Summit, was another highlight. Over 150 “future engineers” proposed concrete yet inventive ideas in response to the needs of elders on healthcare, mobility, eating and living with the theme of “Building Community for Ageing in Place” which endowed elderly with a more convenient and better quality of life in long-term.

With the advancement of gerontechnology, the Expo featured multitudinous ingenious gerontechnology and innovations. Participants were able to discern how those products can improve the quality of life of the elderly and their caregivers as well.

The HKCSS will cooperate with the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation to hold a series of events to advocate a broad usage of gerontechnology, improve the well-being of the elders and build a better society. “Silver Innovator,” a project provides start-up funds and support to innovative ideas, will promote the birth of more new inventions of gerontechnology.

The HKCSS will also work with community groups and focus on public education in the coming year to enhance public awareness of gerontechnology. Social welfare organisations will be invited to try out some new gerontechnology products that are not yet been introduced into Hong Kong. Research and analysis will conduct afterward to confer appropriate goods or technologies to be further localized, hence, to improve the service process and efficiency.

About the Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit

The GIES is the first large-scale Expo and Summit on gerontechnology in Hong Kong which held from June 16 to 18 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Expo covered approximately 5,000-squre-metre exhibition floor with 116 local and international exhibitors. Inventions and products that cover all facets of daily living, including healthcare, home design, food, personal hygiene and care, digital communications and mobility enhancement were showcased in the Expo. Some products were even unveiled for the first time in Hong Kong. For the Summit, thematic forums and over 20 workshops and seminars were held during the three-day event.
