Roundtable on the Elderly Social Housing and Community Care
Elderly Service – Seminar
The aging population in Hong Kong is growing rapidly. While the general public is concerned mainly with the shortage of provision of government-subsidized residential care home and the waiting time, majority of the elderly population in Hong Kong would like to be “ageing in place”. Actually, the government gives policy priority to “ageing in place”, and social service organizations also strongly advocate that the government should establish a robust care network in the community. There is still a plenty of room for improvement in terms of community care system in Hong Kong. What are the other possible methods to provide better elderly housing and care in the community?
Recently, the cohousing experience of intergenerational elderly home in the Netherlands is widely shared in Hong Kong. Through offering the youth with a free accommodation as an incentive this elderly home recruits the youth to provide supporting services, thereby also fostering cross-generation cohesion. Apart from this, non-profit enterprises in the Netherlands also provide other types of accommodation and medial support service for those elderly living in the community, or those just discharged from the hospital. This experience may be of reference value to Hong Kong. In view of this, our Council has invited Drs. Gea Sijkpes MBA, Director & CEO of Humanitas from Netherlands, Mr Daniel Lau, Director (Development & Marketing), the Hong Kong housing Society, Ms Bella Luk, Executive Director of the Helping Hand, and Mr. Sham Ka Hung, Joe, Assistant Director of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council to share their modes of the elderly housing and care. The roundtable is expected to stimulate participants to think about alternative modes of elderly housing and care in order to achieve the goal of aging in place. Topics as follows:
